Landscape Design and Construction

Northway Gardens and Landscaping has been building landscapes for over 30 years. We know that what draws people to Muskoka is the region’s unique and rugged beauty. Our carefully crafted landscape designs make every effort to incorporate and enhance that beauty, instead of looking for ways to upstage or supplant it. Often, our designs incorporate regeneration and restoration, especially at recently built cottages or homes where trees and other vegetation have been cleared away for construction.

Drainage is a key consideration in the beginning stages of any landscape project, particularly in the shallow soil and rocky terrain of Muskoka. Proper drainage is necessary not only for natural precipitation, but also for spring run-off, especially after construction. Northway Gardens and Landscaping ensures creative and naturalized drainage solutions.

For our pathways, retaining walls, and steps, we source our granite from Muskoka and make every effort to use natural stone and boulders. When installing hardscaping, we minimize the use of machinery to protect established trees and shrubs against root compaction.

Our chief landscape designer is owner-operator T.J. Coles. T.J. will visit your site, discuss your project goals and budget, and draw up an initial sketch for your review. After more discussion and an agreed-upon plan, we’ll provide a quote and final design before our shovels hit the soil.

Garden Design and Planting

When it comes to gardening, nature is the best guide. She shows us what works well and where. Our garden designs begin by observing the plants that thrive in particular areas of your property. Considering the shallow soils of Muskoka, any plants that have established themselves should be viewed as assets. With experienced observation, we can design and build a unique garden that incorporates indigenous plants and capitalizes on the strengths of the soil, exposure, and terrain on your property. Not only does this approach respect and contribute to the integrity of the natural ecosystem, it also makes for gardens that require less maintenance.

Some people prefer less naturalized plantings or hybrid gardens that incorporate both indigenous and non-native species. We make the same observations of the naturally thriving plants to help us identify your property’s strengths and challenges. With that information, we can design and plant gardens that successfully incorporate non-native, non-invasive species in beautiful ways.

Our garden designs begin with a site visit and a good chat, to help us understand your goals and the vision you have for your gardens. After talking with you, we’ll draw up a sketch for your review, tweak it until you’re satisfied, and then present you with a final design and quote for the work before we begin.

Restoration and Reforestation

Northway Gardens and Landscaping specializes in restoring waterside landscapes to a more natural and ecologically healthier state by removing lawn areas that extend to the water’s edge and replacing them with native shoreline plants. Retaining or reintroducing marginal plants at the shoreline prevents the erosion of soils into the lake, softens the transition between water and dry land, and improves fish and wildlife habitat. To preserve your view of the lake and your privacy, we plant low-growing native shrubs and take the guidance of arborists in selecting species and location when planting trees.

We also work with clients who are looking to reforest areas of their property to regain a more beautiful and natural environment, particularly after a construction project. In addition to its aesthetic benefits, reforestation prevents erosion and restores habitat for birds and other wildlife while reducing pollution. For all reforestation projects at Northway Gardens and Landscaping, our team returns year over year to oversee and maintain the project until the reforestation is established.  Because reforestation is by nature long-term, we carefully plan each reforestation project so that the species, technique, and design are selected to optimize the chances of success.
